629 CVR   image1840 Islington, England to Red River Settlement Folded Letter,with dateline "Church Missy Institution Islington / May 27th 1840" and addressed to the Reverend J. Smithurst / Red River Settlement / N. W. America. Apparently carried by a Hudson Bay Co. ship to Norway House, on the west coast of Hudson's Bay, then overland by canoe and ox cart to destination. Inside is a neatly written 6 page, cross-written letter discussing interesting subjects such as for example "we have to acknowledge the receipt of the articles you were kind and considerate enough to send for the museum. I can assure you they cut a very respectable figure in it, especially the Esquimaux Lady's Dress, which is quite a novel affair, but may we ask how you can perive of her of so graceful and elegant a habit?". Very fine and a very early cover, as Smithurst arrived there in September 1839.

630 CVR   image1881 Glen William Ontario Cover to Souris Mouth, Manitoba, then Forwarded, mailed from Glen William on SEP.7.1881 to Souris Mouth, Manitoba, with the following postmarks: Winnipeg (SEP.11), Rapid City (SEP.14), Brandon (new ERD SEP.27) and Souris Mouth N.W.T. (OCT.8, rare, used for only 5 months). The cover is franked with two 2c Small Queens one on top of the other, first tied by fancy cancel, second with target cancel, which suggests a forwarding. Edge wear, still fine with good postmark interest and routing (see exhibit page notes).

631 PC   imageTwo Postcards Mailed by a Member of the C. P. Ry. Main Railroad Construction Team, both addressed to Bangor Maine, one is datelined "Win. 4 / 18 / 82" and reads "Geo: - Start out west of here about 150 miles in charge of a division on the wild plains. Will camp in a tent and have cook and teams and C. You need not expect to hear from me often as they don't have daily mails. Address Laomis / Winnipeg / Manitoba / Can. / c/o Engineers of C. P. Ry." No postmarks, very fine. The second card has docketing "Rec'd May 17 / 82" and reads "Geo: Have arrived nicely to our camp when I will write you more fully. Have not rec'd any mail from you on account of washouts. Laomis". Stamp is cancelled by bull's eye obliterator, no other markings, very fine. An interesting glimpse into the construction of the C. P. 632 CVR   image1882 Fort Ellice N.W.T. Registered Cover, mailed from Winnipeg on JUN.13.1882 (c.d.s. free strike) to Fort Ellice, Northwest Territories, with a "Fort Ellice N.W.T / Canada" broken circle receiver dated JUN.23 (a rare postmark, with a Robinson RF of "E", Scrimgeour records only 9 examples). The cover is franked with a 3c Small Queen plus a 2c Registration stamp, both tied by bull's eye cancels. Faults, including missing part of the backflap, still a scarce cover. A Fort Ellice broken circle on a 1c GPC sold for $475 in our October 2022 sale.

633 PC   image1877 West Lynne, Manitoba Postcard, mailed on OCT.13.1877 (very fine broken circle free strike) to Belleville. The card was transported to Pembina by Blakeley & Carpenter (contractors for Fort Garry to USA), then to Belleville to the naturalist John Macoun, who accompanied Sir Sanford Fleming on several trips west seeking a route for the CPR. West Lynne was formerly known as Pembina, and later became Emerson, and this broken circle is known used from 1873 to 1879 (Robinson RF "E"). Very fine, offered on exhibit page.

637 CVR   image1880 Napanee, Ontario Cover to Shoal Lake N.W.T. through Rossburn N.W.T., a 3c Small Queen cover mailed on DEC.11.1880 to Shoal Lake N.W.T., through Winnipeg (DEC.15 backstamp in blue-green) and Rossburn, N.W.T. (JAN.10.1881 partial free strike on front, and ERD). Reduced at right and small edge faults, still fine and scarce, the Rossburn hammer used for only 17 months.

638 CVR   image1897 Woolson, Manitoba Registered Cover to the U.S. mailed on OCT.23.1897 (three crisp broken circles tie the stamps) to Augusta, Maine (NOV.1 receiver) through Winnipeg on OCT.27). The cover is franked with two 3c Jubilees and four ½c Small Queens (one was replaced) paying the 8c rate. A pretty and very fine cover, the Woolson hammer is recorded used from 1893 to 1899 and has a Robinson RF "D".

639 CVR   image1884 Melgund, Manitoba Early Manuscript Cancel on 3c Small Queen Cover, mailed on FEB.6.1884 (post office opened on February 1st, 1884) with a manuscript despatch (broken circle was proofed on Aril 4 1884) addressed to Glen Williams, Ontario (FEB.12 receiver) through Georgetown on FEB.11. Trimmed through corner of stamp at right, still a very rare postmark that has a Robinson RF "E" and two examples recorded by PHSC (incl. this one).

640 CVR   imageTwo Rockwood, Manitoba Covers with Interesting Contents, 1875-1877, both missing their stamps, first mailed OCT.30.1874 to Lynnville, Ontario (their first hammer was only proofed in 1878, so no receiver) through Kildonan (RF "D"), Fort Garry (RF "E") and Windsor Ontario (the 4 page letter talks about everyday life, including a description of a large prairie fire close to the writer's house). The second cover / letter is from the same correspondence, this one mailed on FEB.17.1877, with three very partial backstamps, this letter is much more interesting and discusses the number of convicts that are in a new penitentiary and the building of a new railroad, the fact that they are building a fence around the church as there are now 7 people buried in the grave yard, and tells how one of them accidentally shot himself dead while riding his horse and buggy, etc. Age staining and other faults, still an interesting glimpse (Scan 1) (Scan 2) (Scan 3) (Scan 4) (All Scans)
