731 CVR   image1864 Victoria, Vancouver Paid Cover, mailed from Victoria B.C. to Stamford Canada West (FEB.6.1864 receiver on back), and handstamped on departure with blue oval "POST OFFICE / VICTORIA VANCOUVER ISLAND / PAID", franked with U.S. #65 and 69. Stamps cancelled by sunburst fancy cancels at San Francisco, along with a c.d.s. dated JAN.7.1864. This cover travelled a long journey through Panama, New York, Niagara Falls and Toronto, by train and by steamer. Tiny tear at right, still very fine and rare in such nice condition. We noticed that towns are mostly organized alphabetically (from I to R) dating from the late 1800s to early 1980s, with the majority before the QEII era. Noted a lovely 1844 stampless folded letter postmarked MADAWASKA NEW BRUNSWICK mailed to Foulton, Maine at the 11½d rate, a folded letter mailed from Maine to Maitland, NS through St John, NB and other places, etc in 1853 with nice datestamps and rate markings. We noted many covers from closed offices which would be difficult to assemble. Good variety lot in mixed condition to very fine. See scan for a glimpse of the content and viewing is recommended. A lovely map depicting "a cod fishery off Newfoundland" including a paddle steamer and sailboats, some dogs, fish, a view of the St Johns Harbour full of sailing ships. Appears to be undated, but pencil note on back reading "1851 Tallis" and owner described it as being from 1861. Bit of edge browning and tiny toning spots, still a nice quality map.
