292 CVR.   image1882 3c registered drop post card, franked with 1c yellow and 2c orange RLS, both tied by neat c.d.s., paying the 1c drop letter rate (despite being a post card) plus 2c registration fee. Mailed in London, Ont. (OCT.30.1882). Harrison et al state that private post cards were banned in July 1877 and not permitted to pass through the post again until January 1895. To get around this regulation W. J. McIntosh, clerk of the First Division Court at London, had legal notices printed on post card-sized card stock. Those addressed locally (such as this example) were treated as drop letters at the 1c rate, and could be registered for an additional fee of 2c. Rated as “RR - very rare, no more than half a dozen known” by Harrison et al. A pristine example of this special accommodation rate (most recorded examples have faults to varying degree), very fine (Unitrade 35, F1) (Scan a) Est. $ 300

SOLD for C$375.00
Will close during Public Auction
293 CVR.   image1884 29c quadruple weight registered parcel post wrapper, franked with 2c green (pair), 10c magenta (pair) and 5c green RLS, all tied by duplex cancels and REGISTERED handstamps, paying the 24c quadruple weight parcel post rate plus 5c registration fee. Mailed at St. John's, Qué. (April 1884) to Montreal. Horizontal file fold not affecting stamps, still a scarce rate and very fine. (Unitrade 36, 40a, F2)

At the time of use of this cover, the 5c registration fee was only applicable to parcel post items, with the registration fee on letter being only 2c. This represents an elusive domestic use of the 5c RLS prior to the general increase of the registration fee to 5c several years later.

The sender paid a fee of 25c to Wells Fargo to send the letter using the company’s express delivery services, but it was also required to pay the postage that it would otherwise pay to the government, in this case the 3c letter rate from United States to Canada. 328 CVR.   image1896 1c third class cross border rate, being a US pre-printed post card franked-over with a 1c yellow, tied by a squared circle cancel, paying the 1c "partially printed, partially written" rate. Mailed from London, Ont. (NOV.4.1896) to Chicago. The 1c stamp had to be used as US postal cards were not accepted in Canada, and could generally not be mailed for 1c except when they qualified as printed matter as was the case here. Very fine. 331 CVR.   image1873 6c pre-UPU rate cover to England, franked with a 6c yellow brown, first Ottawa printing, tied by a duplex cancel, paying the 6c pre-UPU rate to England via Canadian packet. Mailed from Montreal (JAN.31.1873) to Emsworth, England (Feb. 13 receiver), and forwarded to Southsea. Cover was inscribed "Pressing" by sender and was sent via New York under the first Packet principle. There was a 2c fee for mail sent New York, which was not prepaid. Thus the cover was handstamped 1d (for the 2c underpayment), which was crossed off as the short payment to be collected from the recipient was doubled to 2d as indicated by the manuscript notation. Bit of edge wear, but a lovely example of the First packet principle. (Unitrade 39) (Scan a) Est. $ 500
