Very rare destination. Burns, Phillip was formed in the 1870s and originally concentrated on Australian passenger and cargo coastal trade. In the 1890s trade expanded to the Pacific Islands. The company survived in shipping until 1970 by which time it had disposed of most of its ships and diversified into other industries. They purchased Makambo Island for $30 pounds in 1908 to become to company headquarters in the Solomon Islands.

The stamp was issued only 1 month earlier. The manuscript "FB" is Frederick Barnett, the Assistant to the Resident Commissioner from 1908 to1914 and acted as the Chief Post Master. The On His Britannic Majesty's Service envelope prepaid the 2d per 1/2 oz letter rate and the 3d Registration fee.

Written during Operation Watchtower, an Allied offensive against forces of the Empire of Japan, the writer, Private Nicholas J Connoly writes his local newspaper in Norwood, Mass to have his particulars included in the Servicemen's column. Nicholas obtained the rank of Cpl US Marine Corps fought in Guadalcanal and Peleliu, received the Purple Heart. and died in 2002 at age 82. Ex. Bromberg

360 E imageBRITISH SOLOMON ISLANDS: 1993 set of six preliminary drawings of the Orchid Aerogramme by Mary Butterfield. Orchids are a very popular design on Solomon Island stamps. Four of the drawings are pencil sketches and two are colorized Aerogramme proofs. All off the works are signed by Mary Butterfield. The preliminary nature of the work is difficult to attribute to a particular design, however one of the Aerogramme corresponds to a number MV-16959 / L127. Original artwork is unique and makes a wonderful display for an artist or exhibitor. Ex. Bromberg
