The writer of the letter is William Gray, likely William Rufus Gray who went on to become Lieutenant governor and the wealthiest individual in the commonwealth through his multiple businesses.

4 imageUNITED STATES, Stampless, 1799, straight line hand stamp "CHFeb15" (Charleston) on neat, readable folded letter, to Newburyport Massachusetts. The write, Elijah Mayhew, a Mass family, writes about selling possibly for Moses Brown (see note) a ship and a desire to get back to cod fishing. .


Captain Moses Brown was a Revolutionary War commander of New England privateers, including the Diligent and Intrepid. In 1799 while the Captain of the Merrimack, they captured L'Magicienne, and French letter‑of‑marque schooner Bonaparte (both occurred after this letter). Careful study and research could revealed what ship was being sold and the circumstances. Was Elijah Mayhew acting as an agent for Brown?

NOV 14, bearing red NEW YORK (Nov 22) and Liverpool (DE5) red transits with manuscript "45" and "40", on reverse black HONG KONG 13 FE 1854 transit and red BESIVER & CO HONG KONG 13 LATE A.H. FRYER & CO. forwarder. Ship and documentation accompanies. Great destination.


Written to Mid shipmen Edwin Osgood Carnes, by his parents whilst serving on the USS Porpoise for its 1853 surveying and exploring expedition. He died at age 28, leaving a wife and two children. The letter refers to Commadore Perry's then current negotiations with the Japanese and the possibility of the use of force, "if he don't succeed by peaceable means will he, or will our government resort to force! I incline to think, that Young America may insert upon it . Well, if force is resorted to, all our men in those parts would be wanted, and your squadron may have a finger in the pee."

9 imageUNITED STATES: Wreck Mail: 1886 U.S.S. OREGON ,Ireland to San Francisco, blue green envelope . bearing N.Y.P.O. label detailing the mail delay. On reverse, New York APR 12 86 transit. The U.S.S. Oregon was passenger liner owned by the Cunard line, sank 14 March 1886The ship was a 520-foot transatlantic inbound from Liverpool that purportedly collided with the schooner Charles H. Morse, 26 miles off Fire Island, New York. The Charles H. Morse disappeared with all hands about the same time. Two hours after the collision the crew abandoned ship with 852 passengers. There was only one fatality, a cricketer Charles Waller who fell overboard and drowned. There were only enough life boats for about half the passengers. the pilot boat Phantom and the schooner Fannie A. Gorham responded to Oregon's flares and boarded all passengers and crew. between them . All passengers were later transferred to the SS Fulda of Norddeutscher Lloyd. This letter addressed to the S. Sherman & Co. in San Francisco.
