283 F 807 CF1 imageThe so, called, "New York" Counterfeit AKA the Barras-Bronx forgery. "1938" Presidential Issue, 3¢ Jefferson deep violet tied together with 1947 Stamp Centenary - Example 2, A very similar cover to the prior lot (no news clipping). The stamps were printed in sheets of 100 with no marginal markings and sold to merchants for $1 00 each . More than 8 million of these counterfeits were made in New York City in 1949 but most were confiscated before they were sold.
(Scott 807 CF1 $300 )

One of the usual ways to tell that this is a counterfeit stamp is that it was perforated 12x12. The only perforations used by the government printing for genuine Jefferson presidential stamps were 11 x 10½. On the counterfeit stamps spots of ink usually connect the horizontal background lines and the paper used was also a bit whiter than the paper used for the government printings.
