2098 image131d, 1911 1d "Victoria Land" Overprint, single tied on locally addressed envelope by Lyttelton 10 MR 13 cds with a strong receiving cancel of Lyttelton applied the next day tying the stamp, ms "Terra Nova" at lower left, cover with some light overall aging and missing backflap, Fine and rare. rnPosted at the conclusion of the British Antarctic Expedition of 1910-13 on HMS Terra Nova led by Captain Robert Scott. The aim of the expedition was to reach the South Pole and carry out scientific research. The envelope is addressed in the hand of Able Seaman Robert Oliphant and was posted on the Terra Nova's return trip to England, having departed Cape Evans on Jan 13. (Image 1)
