CIVIL WAR NAVAL COLLECTION,of a 30 cover correspondence from a Union Naval officer aboard the steam frigates "Wabash" and "Augusta", from the blockade of the Chesapeake Bay to the attacks on South Carolina, as well as a couple
post-war covers from the captain's clerk (Xanthus Smith) to the captain's wife "Mrs. Admiral DuPont". The captain of the Wabash was the famous Civil War Naval Officer Samuel Francis Du Pont (from the famous Du Pont family) who took the
initiative to send a fleet to the Chesapeake Bay to protect the landing of the Union troops at Annapolis, MD. Du Pont was appointed Commander of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, the largest fleet ever commanded by an American
officer. On November 7, Du Pont led successful attacks on Port Royal Harbor in South Carolina which led to the capture of the waters of Georgia and Florida. Several covers have toning and a few have some wrinkling from improper storage, still an
amazing historical correspondence. |
