Multiple boxes just arrived at the last minute, with US postal history, a little foreign and even some stamps, much is from the 19th and early 20th century, as well as WW II to modern, stuffed to capacity with material – that’s an understatement - we estimate that there are be about 20,000+ covers here. A must-sell instruction, no time to go through this properly and a real opportunity for an enterprising dealer. (ex-Levitt)
Housed in five well filled albums, the first for the 1918 to 1929 period, specifically failed inaugural flights including an experimental New York to Chicago cover which was forced down in Pennsylvania before completing the journey via train, also a 1926 swallow bi-plane via Varney Air Lines with crash cachet, another particularly interesting item is a document cover from New York to Toledo, Ohio with C10 (5), P.O. Dept seal, manuscript postage due 40c strike and 8x 5cts postage dues stamps applied, as well as received in bad condition strike and a label from the postmaster explaining the airplane falling in the Monongahela river, as expected some of the covers have fire damage, the second album is 1930-31, equally as detailed and interesting, including collateral, here too many of the covers appeared to meet a fiery end and the same for the third and fourth albums, this time representing 1931-35 and 1936-44 respectively with the fifth album ending in the 1980s., the whole collection must be viewed to be appreciated as it is far more than the sum of its parts. This is a real opportunity to buy an extraordinary collection, offered intact as received.
a lifetime's effort in 31 volumes sorted by state with thousands of items, for the larger cities there are even books of station cancels even sorted by letters and numerals, includes some interesting scarcer flags such as the "Chicago Board of Trade", Exposition Stations, Oklahoma Territorial, etc, one of the largest holdings we have handled, there are also numerous flags on small pieces which come as a bonus, fantastic group for the specialist as this was formed over a 50 year period and includes items taken from the Max Johl collection, with individual items purchased at up to $200 each viewing highly suggested, shipping weight should be considered to as this fills six heavy boxes, much is F-VF.
