 RARE
TAXED COVER: Cover originally sent from Buenos Aires (Argentina) to Lima on 26/AP/1909 franked with 10c. San Martín in oval, it bears a faint postmark on front (the back shows two machine dispatch cancels) overstruck by a Lima datestamp applied on
arrival on 12/MAY. It bears several postage due markings and inscriptions, and in Lima a block of 4 Sc.J40 (1909 1c. postage due stamp) was affixed on back. It also bears a hand-written inscription in rose: "La multa se pagó por W. R. Grace y Co.,
Lima" ("The postage due was paid by W. R. Grace & Co, Lima"). The cover was forwarded to "Iquique, Chile", where it received a violet rectangular Chilean mark (poorly legible) and 2 Iquique arrival datestamps for 18/MAY, applied at 3 pm and 4 pm, one
showing the day numeral INVERTED! The cover has some defects, but it is a unique and exceptional item with a remarkable postal history! The postage rate for a letter from Argentina to Peru at the time was 12c., rather than the 10c with which this
cover was franked! (Image)
