765 CVR   image1860 Unpaid Mourning Cover Incoming from England to P.E.I., mailed unpaid from Appledore, Devon on OCT.31.1860 to Lot 19, PEI (NOV.16 PEI receiver, plus docketing "Rec'd Nov. 19, 60"), via London (NOV.1) and Liverpool (NOV.2 datestamp on front). The "8" handstamp indicates a British claim of 1p inland postage, 4d ocean postage and 3d the half-fine. The charge for a ½oz letter carried by this route was 6d (plus 6d fine) equaling 1sh Sterling or 1sh6d in PEI currency (with handstamp to that effect). 766 CVR   image1870 Underpaid Incoming Cover from England to P.E.I., mailed from Liverpool England on JAN.15.1870 to Summerside PEI (JAN.28 receiver) via Charlottetown PEI (JAN.27 transit) and endorsed "per Steamer Etna via Queenstown". The cover is franked with a 3d stamp only, but PEI was not yet part of Canada so the rate should have been 6d. The cover was handstamped "Insufficiently / Prepaid" and charged 6d made up of 3c deficiency plus 3d half-fine. The total charged was 9d, equal to 1sh1p and ½p in PEI currency (in blue crayon). Vertical crease and overall aging, still a scarce underpaid incoming cover to PEI. Ex Montgomery.
