781 CVR   imageGroup of Five Mailed Unfranked Registered Government Usage Envelopes from the Small Queen Era, 1880-1890, 1880 Post Office "Returned dead letter" envelope mailed to Stratford, with "3" rate handstamp and instructions on backflap; 1884 Henry Morgan envelope with letter inside mailed to his wife, with scarce "REGISTERED / FREE" two-line handstamp and G. Powell "Secretary of State" endorsement (illustrated on p. 239 in Harrison); 1888 #10 envelope with "Department of Justice" logo on backflap, with an early use of the Ottawa Free boxed registration handstamp, and a "FREE R. Brown" handstamp (illustrated on p. 240 in Harrison); 1889 large O.H.M.S. envelope used to send registered mail between two post offices, with Grand Trunk railway postmark on back; and 1890 St John NB O.H.M.S. registered envelope "To be used for money order purposes only". A few small faults, still an interesting group of scarce registration usages. All five are ex Horace Harrison, from his 2003 Robert A. 782 CVR 35, 36, 42 image1896 6c 5th Class Registered Small Queen Cover, mailed from the "Saunders, Lorie & Co. / Manufacturers of fine gold and silver jewelery", in Toronto on OCT.9.1896 to Kirkfield, Ontario, franked with a 1c, 2c and 3c Small Queens (all tied by oval "R"s), paying the domestic sample, or 5th class rate. The side-loaded cover has a printed "PLEASE / DON'T STAMP HERE" emphasizing that the contents were probably fragile and of merchandise nature. Spike hole at right and tape stain at top, still a scarce rate cover and overall very fine. Ex Horace Harrison and still accompanied by its Robert A. Lee auction card.

783 CVR 35, 42 image1896 6c Printed Matter Registered Cross-Border Small Queen Cover, mailed from the Washington Building Trust Co. in Montréal on JUL.25.1896 (squared circle precursor free-strike) to Wallingford, Conn., franked with a 1c and a 5c Small Queens both tied by rubber "R" cancels to an unsealed (unglued backflap is tucked inside the cover) cover with an oval Boston JUL.26 transit. A very rare rate, Firby and Willson only list the more common registered 6c 5th class rate. Illustrated in Arfken on page 222, light bends at left, very fine.

784 CVR 37 image1872 3c Small Queen Illustrated Advertising Cover, mailed from the Melodeon Manufactory in Toronto in April 1872 (light c.d.s.) to Oakville (APR.17.1872 receiver), with a lovely piano illustration. The cover is franked with a 3c red-orange Small Queen, tied by a segmented cork cancel, very fine. The cover is currently in a good quality frame, as for many years it was proudly displayed on the office wall of noted collector Jack Wallace (his pencil notes on back with his purchase price, who his agent and agent fee was, etc.). 787 CVR 67, 78, 82 image1899 12c Registered AR Leaf / Numeral Cover, mailed from Hamilton on JAN.10.1899 to Woodstock, NB (very fine squared circle receiver on back) through Montréal (squared circle precursor on back), with "AR" in circle handstamp for acknowledgement of receipt service. Franked with 8c and 3c Numerals plus a 1c Leaf, paying 12c total (2c postage, 5c registration fee, 5c additional AR fee), slightly reduced at left, still very fine and rare. Ex Horace Harrison, still on his album page and described in the Robert A. Lee sale as "one of only two recorded covers with the A/R H/S and the A/R fee both on the same cover".
