1829 c, entire, etc. imageSouth Africa: Transvaal: Cancellations and Covers: 1880 envelope to Edinburgh, damaged at top, endorsed by soldier from King’s Dragoon Guards at top, countersigned by Capt. A. Gibbings, commanding his own troop, sent Apr. 8 from Pretoria but with 1d. (faults) cancelled by Cape Town Apr. 15 c.d.s., backstamped fine Edinburgh May 14 arrival. Scarce First Boer War concession rate item. In July 1879 at the conclusion of the Anglo-Zulu War, Captain (later Major) Arthur Gibbings had commanded 'A' Troop at the Battle of Ulundi and was present at the capture of King Cetshwayo but died on the march from Meerut to Agra on Oct 27 1881 aged just 35. 1830 c, entire, etc. imageSouth Africa: Transvaal: Cancellations and Covers: 1880 (Sept. 9) incoming envelope addressed to Athole, (stained and one rear flap missing) “via Plymouth/pr “Durban””, franked G.B. 6d. plate 17 PE wing margined tied by Sidmouth duplex. Reverse with Portsmouth and Potchestroom datestamps. The cover is addressed to Alan Ede (1856-98) care of pioneer settler David Forbes (1828-1905), a pioneer settler who had “a very great influence with the Swazis'.” (Sir Garnet Wolsey). The Boers believed Forbes was communicating with the Swazis with the idea of a Swazi raid on the Transvaal and although he denied this his guns and ammunition were confiscated and he was put on parole. Harold Robert Evered was one of the base train clerks seconded from Bulawayo whose responsibility it was to check all mails that had been smuggled out of besieged Mafeking by the northern route to ensure that the correct postage of 1/- had been paid.
