1065 c, entire, etc. imageIndia: 1797 (Dec. 7) entire (in French) to Chandernagor with very fine double oval “GPO/date/pt pd” datestamp in black on reverse with content from a merchant in Calcutta concerning trade in indigo and includes a form of a contract to formalise supply and sales quoting percentages for commission and interest. Chanadernagore, a French settlement until 1950, was occupied by G.B. 1793-1816 and therefore transmitted under the British system. Photo. (Image1)

1066 c, entire, etc. imageIndia: 1818 (Mar. 3) entire (partly cross-written, small piece missing from one page) to Edinburgh with double ring “CALCUTTA POST NOT PAID” c.d.s. (Giles SD6, date in manuscript) with London (on reverse) and Edinburgh arrival datestamps and a framed “1/2” Scottish turnpike charge mark, re-rated twice for a final total of ‘3/8’(d). Letter written by Major Herbert of the 23rd Regiment of foot (part of the Nagpoor Subsidiary Force) to his mother. “Only four regiments remained behind our force. One at the capital and the other three at Hussingbad. He [the Prince of Nagpoor] expected with his enumerable contingent he could easily cut us down in such small numbers. He had a force of 60,000 at the capital....after a very hard contest he was entirely defeated. He threw himself on our mercy and is again reinstated but we have taken the best part of his country from him”. Further reference to the battle of Serinagur. “They had advantageous ground....a heavy salute from all their cannon...they forced me to bow to save my head from a very ugly blow....shot passed me without 3 feet. I seized 4 beautiful hunting hawks which I have been allowed to keep” and the battle of Holkar “....[they] rose up against us with an army of 40,000 horse and 30,000 foot. He was attacked by an army of ours 12,000 strong commanded by Sir Thomas Hislop [1764-1843] our loss was 500 killed and wounded and 3 officers killed and 33 wounded. This is a glorous period in Indian history for the Marquiss of Hastings....the greater part of the Pindaris are also destroyed and they sue for mercy”. Double ring “CALCUTTA GENERAL POST OFFICE/18” c.d.s. (Giles type SD8b, date in manuscript), sent unpaid and with circular “INDIA SOLDIERS/3/LONDON” mark and very unusually “In All” mark applied at top left. Reverse with London c.d.s. and oval evening datestamp and framed “TOO LATE for.MORNG POST” mark. Contents, datelined at Ghazeepore, are to the writer’s uncle with reference to very arduous marches in bad weather, impassable roads, extensive jungles, turbulent rivers, enormous mountains and the death of 1500 Englishmen since their arrival, mentioning he has three years left of service when he intends to return to England and that it has been discovered much of the regiments correspondence was not being sent in a regular manner. Reverse with London datestamps. Contents written by Lt. Col. Kelly enroute to Rangoon “You have heard of the capture of Bhurtpore, at which memorable siege I acted as apt genl to the cavalry, I am happy to say much to Lord Combermere’s satisfaction and the consequence is my present promotion.” He also relates his new position is paid and mentions the poor conditions faced by those returning from Burma. Important insight into the consequences of siege that ended earlier that year. Photo. (Image1)

1069 c, entire, etc. imageIndia: 1831 (June 1) entire (small faults) to Lancaster headed “From Gunner W.Braithwaite 2nd Troops 2nd/Horse Artillery Mhow” and countersigned by a Commanding Officer at lower left, sent unpaid with faint circular “INDIA SOLDIER/3/LONDON” charge mark in black and reverse with chamfered-framed “MHOW/FREE/18” datestamp (date in manuscript; Giles type 2, this example illustrated by him and only recorded used that year) and a London c.d.s. Contents include “It is expected that we will going to war with the Raja of Lahore, named Runjeet Singh. He commands a large army of horse and foot and he had plenty of ordnance, but he has not enough to daunt the hearts of British soldiers. The H.E.I Company is displeased with him because they think he is carrying on secret negotiations with the Russians.” Contemporary insight to the events that led to the First Afghan War. Photo. 1070 c, entire, etc. imageIndia: 1838 (Sept. 19) entire to Moulmein endorsed “C.H.” and “Post paid” at lower left with framed “SURAT/Bearing” (Giles type 4) apparently applied in error as endorsed paid, framed two line “G.P.O” datestamps, framed “CALCUTTA G.P.O/SHIP LETTER” datestamps and framed “AM” mark in black. Written by Charles Hervey who writes of difficulties following the sudden transfer of regiment following a problem with the Rajah of Oudeypoor (Udaipur). “Not one of us could sell our houses and the poor sepoys were obliged to throw away what stock they had laid in for the rains”. He also relates that Surat was ravaged by fire the previous year then flooded so badly that they had to climb onto the roofs of houses to avoid the water and that the changing of the guard was done by boat, he then goes onto to mention that “My Health is altogether very delicate” after the discovery of a two foot long parasitic worm in his right foot. With contents written by a British resident “Poor White was awoken by the disturbance and altho’ pressed by his Burmese servant to wait and load his guns, went out with a small sword. His servant followed 2 minutes later, heard a clashing sword on the opposite side of the bungalow and on running up found his master with his head nearly severed from his body, four speak wounds through his body and his right arm cut off. The party were beaten off but succeeded in burning down the cantonment and killing and murdering upwards of 20 of our men.” Important contemporary insight. Photo. (Image1)

The British have taken Ghuznee, Cabool and Ballessa and defeated Aukbur Khan at the head of 18,000 men.....hundreds have suffered through starvation; they could neither get meat nor drink....The British are withdrawing....the country is too poor to support troops. The lower class of natives.....are so miserable set of beings....if some saw you dying...they would not gave you a drink of water.
