Houison Craufurd, Deputy Assistant Quartermaster of the British Contingent (to his sister) “We are sure, I think, to be ordered to the frontier....we only hope the whole ‘show’ in China is not over.....” and “We left Hong Kong on the 10th (August) at 5pm and 3 other ships and 3 regiments started off with us....yesterday we separated with orders....to assemble at the mouth of the Yangtze River and go up to Shanghai together....Tientsin means certain chance of fighting”.
