Falkland Islands: Early Mail and Documents
Lot Symbol Descrip Opening
429 On piece, front, etc. imageFalkland Islands: Two Great Britain 1d. pink postal stationery envelopes addressed to important early figures, the first to “R.A. Williams Esq/Stanley/Falkland Islands” with red wax seal and apparently carried privately, the second sent 1862 from Southwell, Notts. addressed to Rev. John Ogle in London, cancelled by barred oval with Sept. 2 despatch and next day arrival backstamps. Farming manager Richard Williams (1819-after 1852), appointed by Samuel Lafone to manage his cattle and other interests and regarded by many as a difficult character, had arrived on the islands in Nov. 1846. Rev. John Furniss Ogle (1823-1865) arrived in the Falkland Islands in 1856 as an unpaid volunteer but left the Patagonian Mission after a disagreement with George Pakenham Despard, the Mission Superintendent. An attempt to organise his own mission on Picton Island in the Beagle Channel proved unsuccessful and in July 1857 he returned to England. Ogle drowned at sea in the wreck of the “Borysthène” off the coast of Algeria. (Image1)
