1407 c, entire, etc. imageIndia: Cancellations and Covers: 1797 (Dec. 7) entire (in French) to Chandernagor with very fine double oval “GPO/date/pt pd” datestamp in black on reverse with content from a merchant in Calcutta concerning trade in indigo and includes a form of a contract to formalise supply and sales quoting percentages for commission and interest. Chanadernagore, a French settlement until 1950, was occupied by G.B. 1793-1816 and therefore transmitted under the British system. Photo. (Image1)

Written by 2nd Lieutenant John Laughton to Major General Sir Thomas Anburey K.C.B. “I had the pleasure of disembarking this morning from Bushire and thank God I am safe for the vessel all but foundered in a hurricane we had off this place....I intend....marching for Calcutta...only waiting for my horses....Colonel Baumgardt is here for trying by a Court Martial.....H.Ms. Govt have given us all the local rank of Field Officers in Persia....His Majesty the Shah was pleased to confer on me the Order of the Lion and Seen of the 1st class of Major....last news from Tehran....that the King gone on in progress against Herat but I do not think he will succeed in taking it.....” Important insight into the Persian Campaign and with a typed transcript. 1409 c, entire, etc. imageIndia: Cancellations and Covers: 1838 (Sept. 19) entire to Moulmein endorsed “C.H.” and “Post paid” at lower left with framed “SURAT/Bearing” (Giles type 4) apparently applied in error as endorsed paid, framed two line “G.P.O” datestamps, framed “CALCUTTA G.P.O/SHIP LETTER” datestamps and framed “AM” mark in black. Written by Charles Hervey who writes of difficulties following the sudden transfer of regiment following a problem with the Rajah of Oudeypoor (Udaipur). “Not one of us could sell our houses and the poor sepoys were obliged to throw away what stock they had laid in for the rains”. He also relates that Surat was ravaged by fire the previous year then flooded so badly that they had to climb onto the roofs of houses to avoid the water and that the changing of the guard was done by boat, he then goes onto to mention that “My Health is altogether very delicate” after the discovery of a two foot long parasitic worm in his right foot. Reverse with scarce oval “SOBATOO/FREE” (Giles type 2) datestamp with manuscript date, framed “G.P.O” (Bombay) datestamp and London arrival c.d.s. and framed “PM” mark on reverse. Important insight into military life “Our route consisted of 12 to 16 miles a day, in general starting at 2 o’clock in the morning, striking the tents and loading the camels and elephants, which were so tame that the would come around for a bit of routie (roti)”.
