720 c, entire, etc. imageCeylon: Cancellations and Covers: 1797 (June 29) very early entire to Madras datelined at Colombo, the third of twelve letters from this correspondence to Colonel Aston (12th Regiment) without markings but endorsed “Pt. Pd. 8Fs” indicating transmission by postal means. Written by Philip Rosenhagen (1937-98), a Colombo clergyman who tells that their mutual friend, recently appointed Governor General Doyle (1758-98) has gone mad. “Colonel Dalrymple burst into my apartment yesterday, crying out....he is a gone man....he said within this hour that he had a woman in his belly and a man in his ear”. Following a visit to General Doyle by Rosenhagen he added that Doyle reported “a regiment of soldiers in his belly and eight boys in his throat” He goes on to promise further updates and criticises the military for concealing Doyle’s condition from him. IImportant insight into the mental decline of the poor Governor who apparently died just a few days after this letter was dated. Photo. (Image1)
