Postal History and Covers: Maritime Mail: 1865-1869 The voyage of H.M.S. “Octavia”. A collection of eleven mainly concessionary rate covers written up on exhibition pages, ten from Edwin Churchard, tinsmith on board, addressed to Mrs. Churchard in London, from Madeira, Bombay (3), Trincomalee (2), Calcutta, Abyssinia, Sierra Leone and Portsmouth, seven with the 1d. rate, two at 2d. and one at non-concessionary rate of 10d. Also 1869 cover addressed to him. H.M.S. “Octavia” during 1867-68 became the flagship of General Robert Napier, commanding the expedition to rescue hostages incl. the British Consul who had been taken by Emperor Theodore of Abyssinia.
