1022 c, entire, etc. imageIndia: Cancellations and Covers: 1842 (Jan. 14) entire letter to England endorsed “From Lance Corporal Samuel Spurling, 1st M(adras) E(uropean) Regiment” and countersigned by the commanding officer, Colonel Wells, at lower left with oval “INDIA” (Giles SD6 Die II) and “2”(d) charge mark applied for an unpaid concession rate letter and with arrival and transit datestamps on reverse. Addressed to the writer’s sister and telling of seeing over 500 men die since his arrival six years prior and reflecting on home “Dear Happy England. There is not a country like her in the world....isle of beauty...” and “My father, the best of fathers, I am ashamed of conduct towards him....I am filled full of grief...god will forgive I hope”. At the end of the letter he draws a mock address panel as to how and where to write to him (to obtain a concessionary rate) encouraging his sister to do so, unusual and mainly fine. Photo. (Image1)

Reverse with “MADRAS” (Cooper/Renouf type 6) double arc and framed Genoa arrival datestamps. A highly unusual routing as most mail was sent via Marseilles or an Italian port. Letter sent by Walter Campbell, deputy of the Madras Governor’s Body Guard, to his father, datelined at Fort George reporting a temperature of 34 degrees “my melting mood forbids any attempt at writing on this paper” and following the British forces razing Magdala after King Theodore refused to release British prisoners “This Abyssinian news is splendid - those croaking French writers and ignorant newspaper correspondents will see that an Indian Army and Indian organisations are not quite so bad as your Horse Guards yet. In spite of all they have done to ruin the Indian Army there is a kick in the old dog yet.....and I don’t believe there is another army in the world that would have done it half as well.”.
