928 c, entire, etc. imageIndia: Cancellations and Covers: 1858 (Nov. 16) entire letter (datelined Oct. 30) to Genoa endorsed “pStr From Alexandria to Trieste/by Austrian Steamer” at top and franked 8a. just tied by rhomboid of dots numeral and with “INDIA PAID” crescent (SD20) in red and “D.A.a.L” (Diritto Austriaco austriache Lire) (Van Der Linden 869) Austria-Sardinia exchange mark, the latter charged ‘30’ lire and also rated ‘1/-’ in manuscript in Alexandria from where it was carried by an Austrian Lloyd steamer to Trieste. Reverse with “MADRAS” (Cooper/Renouf type 6) double arc and framed Genoa arrival datestamps. A highly unusual routing as most mail was sent via Marseilles or an Italian port. 937 c, entire, etc. India: Cancellations and Covers: 1880 (Feb. and Mar.) envelopes “via Brindisi” to London franked 4a. and 1a. or 4a. and 1/2a. and with Kabul or Field P.O., Bombay and London datestamps on reverse with six letters in tthe same hand written by Harry Dick Cunningham of the 92nd Gordon Highlanders to his mother with much content related to the 2nd Afghan War incl. 1879 (Sept. 27) at Allahabad where he plans to join the regiment at Kushi, over the Shutargardan pass then move to Kabul, 1879 (Oct. 1) at Kahat where the troops have reached Kushi, he also reports Kinloch’s death when he was transferred to the Bengal Cavalry Regiment, 1880 (June 22) “A reconnaissance force from Charles Gough’s brigade was attacked on the 20th about 17 miles from here....being supported by some of the 2nd Goorkhas, they drove the enemy back....the mail has just come in but 4 bags of letters have been left on the road, the men having bolted with the ponies.....my letters are among those lost”, 1880 (July 8) “Abdul Rahman has accepted our terms and today crosses the Hindoo Koosh....the cavalary...were engaged the other day. Caught the enemy in the open....killing 200 of them.” 1880 (Sep. 21) “I have had nothing but bread and milk for 10 days so am naturally rather weak....I believe our Brigade is to start for Quetta in a day or two”. Fine contemporary insight. (2 covers and 6 letters)
