Letter sent by Walter Campbell, deputy of the Madras Governor’s Body Guard, to his father, datelined at Fort George reporting a temperature of 34 degrees “my melting mood forbids any attempt at writing on this paper” and following the British forces razing Magdala after King Theodore refused to release British prisoners “This Abyssinian news is splendid - those croaking French writers and ignorant newspaper correspondents will see that an Indian Army and Indian organisations are not quite so bad as your Horse Guards yet. In spite of all they have done to ruin the Indian Army there is a kick in the old dog yet.....and I don’t believe there is another army in the world that would have done it half as well.”.
