287 bl imageBermuda: 1918 (May) “WAR TAX” Issue Overprint trials, two full sheets of 120 of the 1d. 'Caravel' printed on semi-photographic blued paper, one sheet with margins and showing two impressions of the overprint, the other sheet without margins and showing clear single impressions, minor faults but mostly fine. The property of another vendor. Ludington records that "An initial stock of 1,500 sheets of the 1d. "Ship" Type, 180,000 stamps was overprinted "WAR TAX" in one line of De Vinne capitals, in black, measuring 18 x 121/2 mm., by the Bermuda Press, (the printing establishment of the Bermuda Royal Gazette) and returned to the Colonial Treasury on April 24th, 1918. The stamps were placed on sale on May 4th. In order to accommodate the sheets in the press employed, the top and left margins of each sheet had to be removed, and this was done in the case of all the War Tax issues." (“The Postal History and Stamps of Bermuda by M.H. Ludington (1978 revised edition), p. 279). Both sheets are affixed at left to 1943 letter from printer John Bushell, stating "These were printed by me when I was manager and King’s Printer of the Colonist Press. I personally fed these sheets into the plate of a 13 by 19 press and the first sheet was used as a guage (sic.): the second sheet came out correct." Unique historic items, of great importance to both collectors of Bermuda and of the War Tax issues. Photo. (Image1)
