Falkland Islands: Early Mail and Documents
Lot Symbol Descrip Opening
557 On piece, front, etc. imageFalkland Islands: THE BLACK FRANK, a strike on contemporary (1874?) piece without F.1 despatch c.d.s. but with red London Paid “6 AU (?)” transit/arrival c.d.s. and rate markings all in red. The “4”(d.) mark (compare Barnes 5/72) suggests an inter-island charge whilst the high “4/-” rate (compare Barnes 4/75, though apparently amended) suggest not only that the cover was registered but that the likely addressee may have been former Colonial Secretary on the Islands, Henry Byng (noting also the similarity to the clipped piece later rejoined to its original envelope (Barnes 5A/74). The London date suggests carriage on the “Black Hawk” departing Stanley July 2 1874, transferring to the “Olbers” at Montevideo for an ill-fated voyage to Southampton during which she collided with and sank a sailing ship outside Bahía. Also two posthumous strikes on piece from official stationery (R.P.S. certificate, 2000) and two fake examples on pieces (both with A.P.E.S. certificate, 1973). Photo. (Image1)
