Captain The Honourable Ernest Gray Lambton Cochrane (1834-1911) commanded the sloop “Peterel” from Apr. 16 1868 to Apr. 7 1870 at the Cape and the west coast of Africa, participating in British attempts to suppress the African slave trade. 3268 c, entire, etc. imageSouth Africa: Cape of Good Hope: 1877 cover to Ireland from the 9th Frontier War, endorsed “On Special Frontier Service from Private Christiane Prince Alfred’s Vounteer Guards”, posted at Fort Bowker and countersigned by commanding officer, bearing Great Britain 1d. cancelled upon arrival. From 1877 to 1878 the Ngika and Gealeka sections of the Xhosa took up arms against the Colonists and their allies. However, the commandos swiftly engaged and defeated Gealeka’s army. Photo. (Image1)

3269 c, entire, etc. imageSouth Africa: Cape of Good Hope: 1878 (June 3) envelope (repaired corner) to Ireland endorsed “No 88 Pte J.Keabe, H Com 1/24 Regt Ibeka, S.Africa”, “FROM THE FIELD” and “Stamps Not Obtainable”, countersigned by commanding officer, marked, probably in London, with “1d” concession rate charge mark, with King William’s Town, Cape Town and Ennis datestamps. Reverse unusually with stain indicating attempt to reseal and endorsed “Recd open &/sealed at Ennis’”. Very scarce example of mail from the Ninth Frontier War, the cover taking an astonishing 17 months to arrive by which time the writer had been killed at Isandhlwana in the Anglo-Zulu War that followed. 3274 c, entire, etc. South Africa: Cape of Good Hope: 1900 (Apr.) opened out envelope to Delagoa Bay (Portuguese East Africa) franked 1d. with bold serifed “T” mark at top and printed “OPENED UNDER MARTIAL LAW” pink label used to reseal and tied on arrival by an indistinct Portuguese East Africa c.d.s., 1900 opened out envelope to London franked Transvaal 1/2d. strip of five with a similar pink reseal label (type 2A) and a Boer pink reseal tape at left and with framed “STOPPED BY CENSOR/RETURN TO SENDER” mark, 1900 O.H.M.S. envelope to England franked 1d. with the word ‘Postal’ inserted at top, possibly as the content was a telegram and 1900 envelope to Manchester franked Makeking 3d. on 1d. block of four, all without comma in the overprint.
