3196 imageSamoa: 1958 Inauguration of Samoan Parliament 1s., six stamp-size essays of alternative designs handpainted by James Berry in carmine and numbered alongside on wove paper (112 x 118mm) dated “6-6-57”. Also the single design beautifully rendered in carmine on thick card, further mounted with red background on card (71 x 51mm), as submitted for approval to the Western Samoan Government which requested greater spaces between the words of the country name, that the stylised flower at left be replaced by the new parliament’s mace and the colour changed to blue. Unique items, newly discovered from the personal archive of Derek M. Friday who worked in the Bradbury Wilkinson Design Department in Surrey from the 1950s until the 1980s. Photo. (Image1)
