Louis Hubert Gonzalve Lyautey (1854-1934), known as “le constructeur du Maroc moderne”, served as the first Résident Général de France au Maroc from 1912 to 1925, resigning when slighted by Paris’s decision to appointed Philippe Pétain to command the force of 100,000 men to put down the rebellion in the Rif Mountains.
