To Sir Thomas Herbert Maddock and with content by William Stanley Clarke [1768-1844] (Director of the East India Company) “Presuming you will be now satisfactorily located as a member of the Supreme Council at Calcutta. I venture to make my young  friend Mr Leonard Parish (a son of Sir Woodbine Parish 1796-1882) the bearer of this note…..who proceeds to your Residency as an Artillery Cadet after having passed the ordeal at Addiscombe….You will see….the state of excitement which prevails just now in Ireland under the malign influence  of [Daniel] O’Connell [1775-1847]……Governor-General [of India, Earl of Auckland, 1784-1849] is now resident at Kensington Gore…..he fortunately steered clear of the Afghan War, he would have deservedly ranked as the best Governor General India could boast!”. 2666 c, entire, etc. India: 1845 (Jan. 26) envelope to Calcutta, headed “Service” with oval “BHOPAL/[DATE]/FREE” (unrecorded by Hammond Giles), framed “AM” and framed “G.P.O/[Date]” marks on reverse. To Sir Thomas Herbert Maddock and with content by Captain J.E.Landers “The contingent is now encamped at Bhopal during the present change of Government. Newab Fanjar Mohamed Khan (titular Ruler of Bhopal) assumed charged on the 23rrd…..no one appears dissatisfied excepting Sekhunder Begum (former wife of the previous ruler of Bhopal) and the late rulers father – Anweer Mohamed Khan, the former confines herself to expressions of disappointment and the latter has collected a few matchlockmen but the sight of the Contingent has frightened him into a fever…..” Outstanding insight into the Indian rulers and very fine.

To Sir Thomas Herbert Maddock and with content by Sir William Grey [1818-78]  (later the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal 1867-71) and Governor of Jamaica) “….[I] do not now start for Dinagepore till the 27th or 28th. I have applied in a private note to [Sir Frederick James] Halliday [1806-1901] (Secretary to the Government of Bengal) for the acting appointment (magistracy) there should it become available……Francis is here…..a rather severe fall from a horse compelled him to defer his departure…..he shall visit me at Dinagepore. Most interesting contents, the sender, a professor of literature studying the Braj Bhasha language, asks for guidance on translation despite problems arising from the language’s sacred connection to the god Krishna. Joseph Héliodore Garcin de Tassy (1794-1878) was Professor of Indology at the School for Living Oriental Languages that was founded for him, a founder and president of the Société Asiatique, and considered Europe’s leading scholar of Hindustani languages.
