2493	, entire, etc.	Germany: Antarctic Expeditions: Rare privately produced photographic postcard depicting the “Deutschland” at South Georgia addressed to Hamburg with seasonal greetings message from ship’s doctor Ludwig Kohl, bearing Falkland Islands 1d. tied by South Georgia SG1 c.d.s. with expedition label tied by very fine strike of “Polarschiff Deutschland/Súd-Georgien/Grytviken/10. Dezember 1911” cachet in violet. One might suggest that the shaky handwriting seen on the card could reflect signs of the appendicitis that would prevent Kohl from participating in the expedition to the Weddell Sea. At South Georgia, however, he was able not only to cure himself but also met his future wife Margit Therese, the daughter of Carl Anton Larsen, founder of the whaling station at Grytviken. Photo.
