963 c, entire, etc. Trinidad and Tobago: Tobago: Selection of entire letters datelined at Tobago with typed transcripts incl. 1774 (July 29) entire letter to (New Lloyd’s Coffee House) London, endorsed ‘to be delivered /by Capt Peters’ at lower left and apparently hand-carried, 1794 (Apr. 5) to Scotland rated ‘6’ and ‘1/7’(d) with London and Edinburgh Bishop mark on reverse and 1794 (June 8) to London with “BRISTOL/SHIP LRE” (Robertson S1), redirected to Edinburgh and rated ‘6’ (deleted) ‘5’ and a total of ‘1/1’(d) with London and Edinburgh Bishop mark and an intact red wax seal on reverse. Content by Johnathan Smith “...I have been very poorly....having had the fever which is very common in this Island...I am sorry that you have not received my other two letters wrote from St Vincent as I told all the skirmishes and battles that I went through....also I wrote you of all the fruits and roots that I knew fit for food.....most of the soldiers behave so badly that there is no trust to be put in them, so people look shy at every one....our way of living here it is the same in St Vincent....we have one pound of bread, 9 ounces of pork and one gill of rum per day, 6 ounces of butter, 3 pints of pease, one half pint of rice per week...”. Myers will allow none to go home on any account till other come out.” “Brig. Gen. Sparrow has succeeded Montgomerie in the command of this Island.....we have had a good deal of sickness....our numbers are diminished.....all we could muster was 100 men, two subalterns who carried the colours, Major Barnes and myself...”.
