(code A; type H1) at top and believed to be the only example of a free letter sent by the Governor in the pre-U.P.U. period. Photo. Note: The addressee, Major Smyth (or Smith) of the 69th Foot Infantry (South Lincolnshire Regiment) arrived from Canada in 1871 to protect to the dockyard, following a successful campaign against a Fenian Raid the prior year at the Battle of Trout River.
