In his candid handwritten letter Clifford complains of a shortage of men and materials whilst acknowledging his good luck in being “somewhere where there is unlimited food and unlimited fuel” and offers to send canisters of cooking fat to his friend suffering under the privations of rationing. 856 c, entire, etc. imageFalkland Islands: 1891 (Jan. 24) Burger & Co. printed envelope registered to New York bearing 1887 1d. brownish claret (corner example), 1889 4d. olive grey-black (lower marginal), 1878 6d. and 1s. with ‘First Bisect’ cork cancellations (Ob. 1/90), type F2 despatch and Feb. 28 red hooded London transit below, purple Mar. 9 receiving mark on reverse. The franking overpaid but reflecting all stamps available in the Stanley Post Office at this point. Carried on the “Kambyses”, this being also the First Mail for the 1891 bisects, their usage demanded by the reduction of the Empire letter rate from 4d. to 21/2d. from Jan. 1 and no 1/2d. stamps yet available. 857 c, entire, etc. imageFalkland Islands: 1891 (Oct. 1) cover to London bearing 1/2d. pale blue-green, Aug. 1891 printing, with 1d. red-brown vertical pair, Apr. 1891 printing, tied by ‘Large Squares’ (Ob. 1/91) cork cancellations, type F.1 despatch c.d.s. at left, correctly paying 21/2d. imperial rate, with London Dec. 3 arrival c.d.s. on reverse, the address partly excised and reconstructed with small part of reverse missing. Carried on the “Hadassah” to Punta Arenas being thought to have been part of the West Falklands mail that had missed the previous Kosmos mailship. Postmaster”. A great rarity, very few pre-1900 reply postcards from other countries used from the Falklands are known, this believed to be the only example with both halves still attached.
