In his candid handwritten letter Clifford complains of a shortage of men and materials whilst acknowledging his good luck in being “somewhere where there is unlimited food and unlimited fuel” and offers to send canisters of cooking fat to his friend suffering under the privations of rationing. The franking overpaid but reflecting all stamps available in the Stanley Post Office at this point. Carried on the “Kambyses”, this being also the First Mail for the 1891 bisects, their usage demanded by the reduction of the Empire letter rate from 4d. to 21/2d. from Jan. 1 and no 1/2d. stamps yet available.
