623 c, entire, etc. imageFalkland Islands: THE BLACK FRANK: 1872 (Jan. 2) a fine strike on yellow envelope and an important example, prepaid at the 4d. rate unique to Montevideo only, with red ms. “4”(d.), fine F.1 despatch c.d.s. and receiving notation at foot, flap mostly missing. Carried on the “Foam” and one of four posted to Montevideo on this day (this with no apparent relationship to the other three). This the only date on which any recorded Black Frank covers were sent to Uruguay. Barnes 2/72. Photo. (Image1)

625 On piece, front, etc. imageFalkland Islands: THE BLACK FRANK, a strike on contemporary (1874?) piece without F.1 despatch c.d.s. but with red London Paid “6 AU (?)” transit/arrival c.d.s. and rate markings all in red. The “4”(d.) mark (compare Barnes 5/72) suggests an inter-island charge whilst the high “4/-” rate (compare Barnes 4/75, though apparently amended) suggest not only that the cover was registered but that the likely addressee may have been former Colonial Secretary on the Islands, Henry Byng (noting also the similarity to the clipped piece later rejoined to its original envelope (Barnes 5A/74). The London date suggests carriage on the “Black Hawk” departing Stanley July 2 1874, transferring to the “Olbers” at Montevideo for an ill-fated voyage to Southampton during which she collided with and sank a sailing ship outside Bahía. Also two posthumous strikes on piece from official stationery (R.P.S. certificate, 2000) and two fake examples on pieces (both with A.P.E.S. certificate, 1973). Photo. (Image1)
