1288 / c, entire, etc. imageRussia: Siberian Expedition 1918-22: British Forces, 1919 (Aug. 19) stampless envelope to Cirencester, Gloucestershire with Army Post Office P.B.1 c.d.s. and endorsed by commanding officer at lower left, twice censored showing circular “PASSED BY CENSOR/(crown)” in black and also in purple tying “OPENED BY/BASE CENSOR No. 16” label at top, part flap missing. The British Army deployed two battalions, the 9th Hampshire Regiment and 25th Middlesex Regiment, comprising around 1,800 troops, and a military mission of 500 men to Siberia, made up of 250 officers and 250 non-commissioned officers, who took part in the training and equipping of the White forces. Greatorex/A Co. 250 Canadian Regt./C.E.F. in Siberia”, sent from Luton, England on Apr. 21 franked 1d. and subsequently returned to sender with Vancouver and Toronto return and transit marks. The Canadian forces of just over 4,000 men under the command of Major General James H. Elmsley remained mainly in Vladivostok undertaking policing duties, the Canadian government refusing to allow them to move to the front and removing the troops Canada between April and June 1919.
