879 / c, entire, etc. imageGibraltar: 1849, 1850 thirteen envelopes with contents or entire letters, a fascinating series of letters from his future wife Christina Ross, lengthy and crosswritten, to Lt. Charles Hutchinson of the Royal Engineers unusually at Spike Island in Cork harbour, Ireland, paid at 1s. rate with double arc despatch, transit and arrival marks, also incoming wrapper addressed to Hutchinson whilst in Gibraltar, strikes and condition vary. Charles Scrope Hutchinson (1826-1912), later rose to Major-General. After his marriage in Gibraltar in 1852 he was posted to the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich where he became Professor of Fortifications. In 1867 he was seconded as an Inspector of Railways at the Board of Trade, a post he held until 1897, responsible, among other things, for holding enquiries into railways accidents and inspecting works. Unfortunately, it was Hutchinson who inspected, and recommended for opening, the ill-fated Tay Bridge in 1878. Photo. (Image1)
