SHIP”, with endorsement sent from the “Highland Monarch” by Mach.-Ob.-Gefr. Gerhard Hävernick to his wife in Buenos Aires and Apr. 3 machine arrival on reverse. Also an unused photographic postcard of the ship and two further intriguing covers to Mrs. Hävernick suggesting an unhappy story, the first sent registered by her husband from Isla de la Ventana and likely containing money, the second sent 1948 (Jan. 14) from the camp for undesirable aliens at Le Fraschette di Alatri, Italy. (3 covers) The crew of the “Graf Spee” were compulsorily repatriated on the “Highland Monarch”, departing on Feb. 15 1946, although many did not wish to leave. In the confusion prior to departure, the British attaché noted a suspicion that “some substitutions might have occurred” and afterward a significant proportion of the original crew chose to return to Argentina. (3), showing fine strike of Naval Censor 258 cachet and resealed by white on black “CENSURA NAVAL ARGENTINA” label, very rare. Also a group of fourteen photos taken on the “Belgrano” during naval exercises in 1969. Headland of the British Antarctic Survey dated Apr. 3 1982 after the event. Accompanied by a 1986 letter of confirmation from Headland at the Scott Polar Research Institute in which he records of the covers that “I had by rather a fortunate series of chances, an Argentine guard smuggle them out from King Edward Point unknowingly and they were with my personal effects aboard “Bahía Paraíso” and in the prison camp at Puerto Belgrano.” One of a very small number of signed covers (stated “only about a dozen”). (in use for one week only) with additional strike and large St. Andrews Bay Mar. 24 dated cachet at left, with enclosed four page letter written by Annie Price on Mar. 24. Also airmail ‘carriage’ envelope sent from London to Stanley on June 13 enclosing the cover for eventual delivery with inserted printed message from Deputy Postmaster Bob Headland explaining that the item had been carried in hand luggage whilst a prisoner of Argentina. Rare, particularly when retaining both contents and carriage envelope. Cindy Buxton and Annie Price were filming a “Survival Special” for Anglia Television on South Georgia and had been living alone at their camp in St. Andrew’s Bay for seven months when fighting broke out.
