Crandon/Leading Stoker/H.M.A.S. Australia/Port Stanley/Falkland Islands/off Patagonia/South America/South Atlantic Ocean/Jan 3rd 1915”. A scarce card from the brief visit of the “Australia” for repair to her propeller and where she finally received news of the defeat of the German squadron. On Jan. 6th, having left Stanley the previous day, she intercepted and sank the “Eleanore Woermann”. Also unused p.p.c. showing members of the crew of the “Australia” on deck and undated envelope to Aberdeen bearing G.B. 1d. red tied by dumb cross with double circle “PASSED/CENSOR” (Gould 36C) known to be from the “Australia”. 584 / c, entire, etc. imageFalkland Islands: 1914 Battle of the Falkland Islands, Von Spee’s Asiatic Squadron 1906-15, SMS “Cormoran”, Envelope noted “Feldpostbrief” to Worms, endorsed from the “Cormoran” on reverse, with two light strikes of Marine Schiffspost No. 8 “1 3/15” c.d.s., resealed by U.S. censor label and with “Auslandstelle Emmerich/Frei-/gegehen” cachet in violet. Also unused photographic card of the Russian officers of the “Ryazan” being transferred to the “Emden” after their capture. SMS ”Cormoran” was originally a Russian merchant vessel named “Ryazan”. Captured by SMS “Emden” on Aug. 4 1914 she was converted into a raider at Kiautschou but forced to later seek port at Apra Harbour in Guam. The United States, then neutral, refused to supply provisions sufficient for Cormoran to make a German port and after the U.S. declaration of war on Apr. 6, 1917, the Naval Governor of Guam informed “Cormoran” that she would be seized as a hostile combatant, prompting her crew to scuttle her. In the resulting action seven members of the crew were killed, the others taken into custody as prisoners of war. Government blue paper “THE FALKLAND ISLANDS ACTION./8 DECEMBER 1914.” produced by the Intelligence Division of the Admiralty War Staff (I.D. 1015) in Aug. 1915, based on an intercepted letter containing an account given by Sub-Lieutenant Richarz of the “Dresden” (ex Faulkner), also 1915 (July 3) official bulletin from C.F. Condell, Colonial Secretary in Stanley relaying extract from Supplement to the London Gazette of Mar. 2, with “CLIFTON STATION/WEST FALKLAND” oval handstamp, some folds and other minor faults but both scarce items.

594 / c, entire, etc. imageFalkland Islands: 1914 Battle of the Falkland Islands, Von Spee’s Asiatic Squadron 1906-15, SMS “Emden”, 1914 (July 27) envelope to Halle sent from the ship at Tsingtau four days before her departure, franked 10pf. pair with three strikes of Marine Schiffspost No. 28 c.d.s. SMS “Emden” was the second and final member of the Dresden class of light cruisers built for the Imperial German Navy. In the early months of the War she was detached for independent raiding in the Indian Ocean enjoying considerable success. Whilst engaged in a raid on the Cocos Islands on Nov. 19 1914 the “Emden” was attacked by the Australian cruiser HMAS “Sydney” and run aground. Out of a crew of 376, 133 were killed in the battle and the “Emden” was raised to iconic status both during and long after the hostilities. Photo. (Image1)

Hermann Oswald from Verdala Barracks (apparently unconnected to the “Emden”) comprising plain postcard, photographic card depicting prisoners’ choir and orchestra, P.O.W. letter card and 1916 printed Christmas postcard (stained, but with also another in better condition sent by French P.O.W. to Paris). (6 items) The 117 uninjured survivors from the “Emden” were taken on the “Sydney” to Colombo and subsequently transferred to Malta where officers were sent to Verdala Barracks and other ranks to Fort Salvatore. Emden/Liverpool N.S.W./Australien”, bearing two 10pf. largely torn away by suspicious censor, cancelled by Marine Schiffspost No. 55 “20/4 /15” c.d.s’s, “Auslandstelle Emmerich/Frei-/gegehen” cachet in blue-black, red circular “POST FREE/P.C./PRISONERS OF WAR” and boxed “PASSED BY/CENSOR”, and with “GERMAN CONCENTRATION CAMP/LIVERPOOL N.S.W.” facsimile signature mark in blue. After the battle HMAS “Sydney” returned to North Keeling Island only after two days by which time 134 of the men from the “Emden” had died. The 66 seriously wounded were transferred on the “Sydney” and “Empress of Russia” to Colombo and eventually to the P.O.W. camp in Liverpool, N.S.W. Photo. (Image1)
