545 / c, entire, etc. imageFalkland Islands: Government House envelope signed by Governor Allan Cardinall on reverse, addressed to Hampshire franked 1d. tied by PS.2A c.d.s. and redirected to R.A.F. Trombay, India, with Fareham Dec. 28 machine datestamp. Sir Allan Wolsey Cardinall KBE, CMG (1887-1956) travelled to the Falklands as Colonial Secretary and replaced Sir Herbert Henniker Heaton as Governor the following year. Cardinall remained in office for the rest of World War II during which a large garrison was stationed in the Islands, most of the children from Stanley were evacuated to the camp (returning in October 1942) and Operation Tabarin was launched. His development plan, summarised in a 1942 despatch to London, achieved some improvements to life in the islands although many progressive suggestions were not adopted until decades later. Photo. The “Norsel” had been the vessel used by the Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition 1949-1952, F.I.D.S. in 1954-55, the French in 1955-56, and later featured in Michael Palin’s “Pole to Pole” journey in 1991.
