VERY RARE 6d 'QUEEN-ON-THRONE' COVER TO PRUSSIA (BERLIN) WITH RARE OVAL-FRAMED "F. ¦ 39" ACCOUNTANCY MARK, ETC.; Remarkable and spectacular 17 Jan. 1860 env. (minor creasing) from Geelong (albino sender's embossed oval "IMPORTER OF HARDWARE/F. BAUER/RYRIE ST/GEELONG" on the front) to a firm in "Berlin" franked by roulette 6d Blue 'Queen-on-Throne' (good centring) tied very kindly by a small part of a very fine Geelong barred "2" numeral at left (leaving the Queen exceptionally clear). Endorsed "Pr R.M. Steamer Northam via Marseille" ("via Southampton" crossed out) but also oddly endorsed "P. Travelling Post between Marseilles & Lyons" all on the front & charged "17" (blue ms) on delivery; with fair red 2-ring "AUSTRALIE V. SUEZ" cds and a partly fine rare oval-framed "F. ¦ 39" Accountancy Mark (Van der Linden 1174; rarity 7/8) also on the front. There are backstamps of the Marseille a Paris TPO (3 May), Aachen & Berlin. Not recorded in Palmer, who only records 4 covers from Victoria with this "F. ¦ 39" mark and only 2 pre-UPU covers to Berlin (1866/67). Highly Important Exhibition Piece. Recently discovered in the U.S. Cross Reference: ACCOUNTANCY MARKS, GERMAN STATES, FRANCE, MARITIME MAIL....
