Lot 318 - 1865 ENVELOPE TO CANADA AT THE RARE 6d RATE - ADVERTISED NOT CALLED FOR: 9 Feb. 1865 env. from Bahamas to Montreal bearing Chalon 1863 6d lilac perf. 12½ (SG 30) tied by a good "AO5" cancellation with boxed "ADV NOT CALLED FOR" and "ADV" hs. Very rare. Ex Nixon. Note: 1865 shortage of 4d adhesives. For two months in 1865 there were no 4d adhesives available. Two covers only with overpaid 6d to Montreal & N. York are recorded and two covers to Hoboken, NJ and Montreal with 4 x 1d are recorded for this period. 13 Feb. 1865 the "Syren" (last blockade runner) left for Charleston, and during the period that this letter left Nassau, and was finally advertised in Montreal, the USA Civil War ended and Lincoln was assassinated.....
