Auction Highlight

From Worldwide & Great Britain - Cavendish Philatelic Auctions Ltd. - March 3-5, 2026

Lot 1774 - VERY RARE DUBLIN EXPERIMENTAL DIAMOND "186 186 186" ROLLER CANCEL ON 1d RED BLOCK OF FOUR COVER; 27 May 1859 long env. (minor edge wear) from Dublin to “Ballymote” with a block of four 1d Red ‘Stars’ tied by two ‘rolls’ of the very rare “186 186 186” cancel; it weighed above one ounce & up to 2oz, hence the 4d rate. This Dublin “Roller Cancellation” was tried out in the late 1850s but was very little-used and so this is one of only three complete covers that have been recorded (one printed matter & two 4d-rate covers, one of which has not been seen since 1971). Curiously, both this example, and the other letter-rate cover have the Dublin duplex struck additionally to mark the date of posting, so it was not a very efficient way of postmarking letters quickly! The Printed Matter cover only has the Dublin backstamp rather than an extra duplex on the front. One of the rarest of all Irish and of all Line Engraved QV Cancellations. Cross Reference: IRELAND PRE-1922 - POSTAL HISTORY, 1854-65 1d REDS.... Currently GBP 260
