Lot 1639 - FIRST DAY OF REDUCED 1s-3d RATE VIA BELGIUM, GERMANY & BRINDISI ROUTE COVER AT OLD 1s-7d (+ 1d LATE FEE) RATE; Unusual 16 Dec. 1870 EL (horizontal crease through 2 stamps) routed "Via Brindisi" to Yokohama, sent on the day that the very short-lived 1s-7d rate (originally via the Fell railway but re-routed via Belgium because of the Franco-Prussian War from 21 Oct. 1870) was reduced to 1s-3d, but franked for the 1s-8d rate (1s-7d plus 1d Late Fee) by 1864 4d Vermilion (2; pl.11 - SG93/J58) + 1/- Green (pl.4, overlapped; SG115/J104) all tied by very fine "LONDON/105" Diamond Duplexes, with a very fine red boxed "L1" hs (indicating Late Fee paid) adjacent, and with a faint "HONG KONG" cds & very fine blue uncoded "YOKOHAMA" cds (across the join) on the reverse. Rare example of the 1s-7d rate rate and an (almost First Day Cover of the (commoner!) 1s-3d rate. Spectacular exhibition Item of great interest.
