Lot 1170 -
RARE INDIA LETTER ERROR - "RYDE/SHIP LETTER" CANCELLED BY LONDON 'CRUTCHED CROSS' & "INDIA" MARKS; 1 Sept. 1838 EL from "Port Louis, Mauritius" to London endorsed "[Per Ship] Waterloo" with a faint red "MAURITIUS/POST OFFICE" 2-ring ds on the top flap, beside "RYDE" (22 Dec.) & London (23 Dec.) cds's. On the front is a very fine very scarce framed step-type "RYDE/SHIP LETTER" which has been applied in error (the ship came from Calcutta) and so it was overstruck by equally very fine matching brown-olive London boxed "INDIA" (filing fold) and 'Crutched Cross' Inspector's marks. The India Letter rate was only 4d whereas the Ship Letter rate was 8d, so the charge in this case was "1/-" (4d India Letter + 8d inland to London). The boxed "INDIA" is very unusual on mail from Mauritius and the London Ship Letter Office's 'Crutched Cross' is rare on mail from any country. Spectacular Exhibition Item. Cross Reference: ISLE OF WIGHT, SHIP LETTERS, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, INDIA....
