Letter written in Bahia on 15.8.1853, entered the mail on 26.8, transported by the “Great Western” to Lisbon, where it arrived on 10.9, mark of the Transatlantic Packet in blue LSB PT 1. In Lisbon, the postage of 300 reis was applied, entered in the Lisbon account book, amended with ABATIDA, applied on the back, as the destination and collection of the postage belonged to the Mortágoa post office.(Image 1) (All Images)

432 imagePortugal. Letter sent from England, Broaknell, on 29.4.1871, franked at one penny, and destined for Plymouth. It was marked in Devonport on 29.4, from where it was redirected to the Plymouth Naval Hospital, where it arrived on 16.5. There was handwritten “Not Known at the RN Hospital Plymouth”, and a piece of paper marked LISBON, to where it was sent, was pasted. It arrived in Lisbon on 22.5, where the sea postage of 160 reis was applied, plus 50 reis, and the total of 210 reis was marked. This last marking was crossed out and the postage of 160 reis was applied, the only one to be paid by the recipient. The closing band is missing on the reverse. Letter written in Bahia on 17.9.1851, delivered to the Bahia Post Office (illegible red mark), which forwarded it to Portugal on the Royal Mail “Tay” packet. Upon arrival in Lisbon, it was marked with P. BRITº LSB-PB1, in blue, postage of 180 reis. It also paid 40 reis for land postage to Mortágoa, for a handwritten total of 220 reis.
