81 imageMexico. 1856 Issue. Zacatecas 8r. Lilac, used on registered cover front from Sombrerete to Zacatecas dated May 24, 1860, and arrival on May 28 alongside. Stamp has large margins all around. Front is creased and slightly aged. On reverse, on 28 May, annotated as received by the recipient and signed, as stipulated by the postal rules. Sold for $5,000 in the 2000 Regency auction (lot #6085). 2024 MEPSI certificate, signed Shelton. Scott 5.

Yellow, mainly good margins, tied by Fresnillo h.s. to an attractive cover addressed to Guanajuato; horizontal filing fold that does not affect the stamps. While this cover may have been professionally cleaned, this is not mentioned in the opinion; however, we note it for accuracy. Very few covers exist exhibiting a split of the 8r. used in conjunction with a complete stamp of any denomination. MEPSI certificate. Scott 2, 5d.

84 imageMexico. 1856 Issue. Zacatecas Manuscript Overprint ½r. Blue, strip of four with margins varying from complete to ample, just very slightly cut into at top left, affixed to a pristine cover originating from Fresnillo, with excellent cancellations. The cover was either taken privately or sent via the mail service to Aguascalientes, where it was posted and cancelled for onward transmission. This legendary showpiece is one of only two recorded covers, showcasing the largest known multiple of this provisional. While we have not seen the other known cover, the outstanding state of preservation of the cover presented here is noteworthy; it was sold for $16,000 at the 2000 Regency auction (lot #5575). Green, group of four items including a well-margined 2r. on cover from Aguascalientes to San Luis Potosí, dated December 27, 1858, one 1r. off cover, two pieces including one with three 1r. singles, the other with 1r. and 2r. Margins are mostly good, though some stamps are touching or cut into at the bottom. As the Conservatives were about to take Zacatecas, the postmaster left the city and temporarily relocated to Aguascalientes; he brought the stamps but not the overprinting device, resulting in all the stamps being overprinted manually. Blue, group of 48 stamps with singles, pairs and strips of four, two cover fronts, one cover and an early Mexico district registered-mail front, displaying fresh examples and in good condition, often with attractive margins, with districts including Mazatlán, Veracruz, Córdova and Mexico. The registered cover front is addressed to Morelia, dated August 21, 1856 and franked by 1r., featuring the earliest cancel used in Mexico City (Schatzkès #826); part of the franking missing, nevertheless most likely representing one of the earliest dates known. Mazatlán includes 17 stamps (Mazatlán, Cosala, Culiacán and Sinaloa); the other two cover fronts originate from El Fuerte y Cosala. Veracruz comprises 31 stamps (Veracruz, Alvarado, San Andrés Cosamaloapan, Minatitlán and Otatitlán). Córdova is represented by one cover from Huatusco. Blue, group of 72 stamps (singles, pairs, and strips of four), 10 covers (including four entire letters), and one cover front, with districts including Apam, Chalco, Chiapas, Córdova, Durango, Jalapa, Guanajuato, Mexico, Pachuca, Tampico, Veracruz, and Querétaro. Highlights feature a strip of four from Jalapa (tight margins at bottom) with PF opinion, an impressive double impression with MEPSI certificate (Scott $150), strip of four with Chiapas pen cancel (narrow margin at bottom), Yatee pair, Papasquiaro strip of four, Mineral del Monte, Actopan, Cuéncame (cut into pair), and the very rare Soto la Marina strip of four. The covers are in good condition, with five paying the 1856 single rate; including two particularly attractive examples from Veracruz (pair and strip of four), Mexico vertical pair paying the single rate, and Durango pair with mute cancel. 90 Used imageMexico. 1856 Issue. Various Districts Assembly comprising 94 stamps, 10 covers, and 4 cover fronts. Stamps include: ½r. Blue (11), 2r. Emerald (5, with one from Cuernavaca, NF $100), 4r. Red (8, one as a bisect on piece), 8r. Lilac signed Carl Lange, and the remaining are primarily 1r. (including a pair with the rare stagecoach oval cancel) as well as 2r. Districts represented include Guanajuato, Veracruz, Morelia, Mazatlán, Zacatecas, Mexico, Puebla, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosí, Durango, Morelia, Cordova, Tampico, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Hermosillo, Lagos, Cuernavaca, Campeche, Chiapas, etc. Small towns are well represented, featuring Linares, Ciudad Guzmán, Talpa, Huatusco, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Mapimí, Gavilanes, Irapuato, Diligencias de Cuernavaca, Angamacuticuaro, Misantla and Guaymas. Durango features three covers, including one with three singles of 1r. from Durango to Mexico City, a combination of 1r. and two ½r. with dramatic red cancel from Peñón Blanco to Durango, and a 4r. bisect used from Gavilanes to Durango; one Córdova cover from Huatusco to Puebla bearing one 2r.; and an entire letter with two ½r. pairs from Lagos to "wherever he is found to be." The stamps off cover are all ½r. and comprise a Guanaceví pair (margins all around), an Encarnación single (cut into at left), and a Lagos pair on piece (cut into at right and left).
