Yellow, vertical strip of four with frame line at right and four singles, mostly with good to large margins, all tied by dispatch c.d.s. on cover from Mexico City to Guadalajara. Vertical crease affecting two singles at right. A curious manuscript contemporary note on the reverse states: "Abierta y vuelta a cerrar por" ("opened and resealed by..."), signed by Ramón Fernández, likely indicating that the addressee did not accept the contents of the letter. Green, cut into at left, otherwise displaying good margins, on an attractive cover to Coburg, Germany, carried across the Atlantic by British packet with "GB/1F60c" Anglo-French accountancy marking and French Calais entry c.d.s. alongside, German straight-line h.s. indicating entry from France at base, along with various rate notations featuring 43 kreuzer for the total postage due, this including 34 kreuzer corresponding to the Great Britain and France postage due, and the 9 kreuzer portion according to the German-Austrian Postal Union. Backstamped in London, Paris, Frankfurt, and Coburg. Small paper loss at top left of the cover, not affecting the franking. Only five covers are recorded in the first issue addressed to present-day Germany. Sold for $5,250 at the 2000 Regency auction (lot #6071). Scott 3.

The cover, addressed to Puebla on May 2, 1859, is a postal fraud, as corroborated by the previously used stamp (signed Lamy). The cover front is an "Across the Lines" mail to Mascota with Guadalajara h.s. struck in transit and a "2" marking, indicating the postmaster did not recognize the stamp as valid. Scott 3.,

Emerald, a very fresh example with huge margins, clearly showing an August 1st, 1856 c.d.s., marking the first day of issue. The only recorded genuine first-day-of-issue usage, a key and highly significant item for the most advanced collections of Mexico. Sold for $10,000 in the March 2001 Regency auction (lot #1952).
