The Lionheart Collection of British Empire Part XX - October 31, 2024

We are pleased to present the twentieth part of the Lionheart series of sales. This sale has particularly strong sections of British East Africa, Nyasaland and Niger Coast Oil Rivers. As well as these sections there are some key British Empire rarities including a superb plate corner example of the Malaya Straits Settlements KGV Script $500, a hugely rare Mauritius Post Paid early impression 1d. pair and a mint Newfoundland 1919 ‘Hawker’. Throughout the sale there are single country collections and fine mint sets. Something for all collectors! Highlights:
  • British Guiana, 1852 Waterlow 1c. black on magenta, large margins all around and tied to piece by 'DEMERARA' (6.53) c.d.s., faint trace of a crease at lower right not affecting the appearance; a very fresh and bright example of this iconic stamp, notorious for quality issues. Signed Guilio Bolaffi and Peter Holcombe and accompanied by their Certificates (1963) and (1981). S.G. 9, £6,500 (Lot 33)

  • Mauritius, 1848-59 Post Paid Issue, 1d. orange-vermilion, earliest impression, horizontal pair [2-3] with margins just touching in a couple of places, good to large elsewhere, cancelled by two crisp strikes of '1' in concentric circles in blue; a very fine and rare multiple of the earliest printing. Brandon Certificate (2010). S.G. 3, £36,000+ (Lot 111)
  • Nyasaland, 1897 (31 Dec.) 1d. on 3/- black and sea-green, variety 'PNNEY' [4/2], well-centred and with large part original gum; a fine example of this rare printing error. B.P.A. Certificate (2022). S.G. 53a, £10,000 (Lot 167)
