13 ng 5 image#5, 1860 5c Brown Connell, an especially handsome and choice unused example of this sought-after rarity, being particularly well centered and boasting completely intact perforations all around (most of the existing copies have significant perforation damage, either due to scissor separating or from having been roughly pulled apart), rich color and crisp impression on fresh white paper, very fine; clearly one of the finest condition examples extant among a population of perhaps no more than 50 or 60 copies; signed Bloch and accompanied by 1979 Friedl certificate (Unitrade C$18,000.00).The 1860 Five Cent Connell issue of New Brunswick is one of philately's most "infamous" stamps. The stamp was prepared at the request of Postmaster Charles Connell, who decided to use his own portrait on this value, the most commonly used value of the period, instead of Queen Victoria's portrait. This vain decision was so egregious that it offended the sensibilities of virtually everyone at the time resulting in Connell's removal as the Postmaster. The stamp was immediately withdrawn from circulation before any were issued.Very few examples exist of this fascinating stamp, and those that do are invariably found with creases, thins and most often perforation faults. Sound examples are extreme rarities. (Image) $12,500.00
