22965 Hellas 35c imageThe spectacular and unique 390 Lepta franking 1871-72 20 Lep blue, two strips of five + two strips of four + single + 10 Lep single, all tied by scarce SKIATHOS cds's on cover front sent 1872 (Sep 22) to Napoli, there are a few faults as expected but the whole is full of character and must be one of the most important & spectacular frankings of Greek Philately; outstanding exhibition showpiece & one of the highest Large Hermes Heads frankings recorded. Rate: 390 Lepta, being triple weight registered, valid from 1865. (3x65 Lepta = 195 Lepta triple weight simple letter. The general regulation for all registered letters was for these to be charged with double the amount due for simple ones. Although the 1865 treaty between Greece and Italy provided for a 55 Lepta universal registration fee, it seems that in this case this was overseen and the general rule of double postage was applied. 211130 RHM 2 imageA UNIQUE CANCELLATION AND AN EXTRAORDINARY "SEMI-XIPHOPAGUS" USAGE ON COVER 1843, 60r black, late impression, position 18 from the First Composite Plate, a key positional piece from the lower left corner of the pane, large to enormous margins on two sides clearly displaying the corner plus an additional interpanneau rule at base, a magnificent "semi-xiphopagus" example used on reverse of 1st April 1844 entire letter from Jacarey via Pindaminhangaba to Rio de Janeiro, with the stamp cancelled in transit by framed "PINDAMI/NHAN/GABA" hs in brown (Ayres 1402). A manuscript note by Saoul Newbury above the stamp has been erased and central file fold clear of the franking. The only "Bull's Eye" cover recorded from this locality, as well as an extremely rare letter exhibiting a "semi-xiphopagus" which additionally represents a key positional piece. Cert. 219417 O Michel 26 x K imageTHE UNIQUE 1879 7 KOPEK INVERTED CENTRE THE RAREST STAMP OF RUSSIAN PHILATELY 1879, 7k grey on carmine, horizontal laid paper, Centre Inverted, slightly centred to bottom left and preserving its design exhibited complete, with no perforations entering the external frame line, showing indistinct cds which was lightly struck, thus enabling to clearly bear the space occupied by the variety, which is virtually not cancelled, very fresh enhancing the colours, with good embossing and intact perforations all around. Certificates Pascal Scheller (2025), Roger Calves (2008), and RPS (2012). Yvert 500.000 EUR. It is quite possible that this is the only genuine example known of this rarity. One of the great philatelic rarities of Russia, in addition to being one of the most important inverted centre stamps of the world, with all the fascination that this variety implies in classic philately. Note: This example was mentioned by the A.I.E.P. experts Zbigniew S. Mikulski and Ortwin Greis to be "the only known copy of the 7 kopek stamp with an inverted centre" ("Fakes Forgeries Experts" n. 5, May 2002). This example was highlighted in that article in contrast to others with this variety which surfaced in the United States and were proved to be fakes. Provenance: Discovered in 1936 by the famous Italian dealer Renato Mondolfo in Triest, who sold it to Théodore Champion. Being a British Commonwealth rarity this proof sheet would serve as an important addition to a specialised NSW exhibit collection resp. Commonwealth collection. VERY FINE. THE ONLY 6-CENT 1869 COVER KNOWN TO US SHOWING A MIXED FRANKING WITH FRENCH STAMPS. AN IMPORTANT COVER THAT DEMONSTRATES THE PECULIAR POST-TREATY PERIOD OF UNITED STATES AND FRENCH MAILS. The expiration of the 1857 U.S.-French postal treaty on January 1, 1870, left both countries without a new agreement to govern the exchange of mails and division of postage. The U.S. Post Office Department announced that letters sent direct to and from France would be charged 10c, the rate generally applied to any country with which the U.S. had no postal treaty. Letters could also be sent by British Open Mail via England at the 4c rate. The Phantom Rate, announced only for Algeria but also applicable to France, provided another means of prepaying mail to France via England. However, these three options still did not allow a correspondent to prepay the full postage with his own country's stamps, and covers from this post-treaty period typically show due markings of the receiving country. True mixed frankings -- so-called Group I mixed frankings -- are defined in the 1869 PRA census as having stamps of two or more countries applied conjunctively to pay the rate or rates necessary to carry the letter from the sender to the addressee. Group I mixed frankings are more desirable than covers showing combination frankings for forwarding. Only very few 1869 issue Group I covers are recorded, the most famous being the Bill Gross US 1869 10 cent + France 20c/40c cover sold at Siegel auctions and estimated at the time 50.000-75.000 USD. There is also a 2c 1869+6c 1870 cover to France with a similar 20c/40c French franking.
