Sender's directive "Pr. t Schip de Juff Johanna, Captn Cuperus, D:G:G:"; internal receipt docketing of Nov. 17, 1789. VERY FINE. A FULL AND CLEAR STRIKE OF THE RARE "VOC 6 ST" HANDSTAMP ON A PACKET LETTER FROM HOLLAND TO BATAVIA VIA THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE. This cover was carried on the Juffrouw Johanna under Capt. Fettmenger to "Den Heer Christianus Carolus Hendrikus van der Aa" in Haarlem; with sender's directive "Pr. Schip [Terlengen?]". Red crayon "6" stuivers rate crossed out and re-rated "8" to include 2s from Amsterdam to Haarlem; receipt docketing on back with Jul. 9, 1791 arrival date, with intact red wax seal. VERY FINE. A CLEARLY STRUCK "VOC 6 ST" HANDSTAMP ON A SHIP LETTER FROM BATAVIA TO HAARLEM VIA THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE WITH UPRATING FOR DUTCH INTERNAL POSTAGE. Folded cover with some minor wear at right and ink erosion spot at end of “Samarang”, large part of black seal on back. 9004   image1822, complete folded letter datelined Salatiga 25 June 1822, sent to Boutet in Djokjokarta. Struck by circular red "AFDG/SALA/TIGA" with peculiar lettering. Endorsed "Gefrankeerd st. 4". The circular marking of the "afdeeling" or division of Salatiga is somewhat similar in type to Wolff de Beer's types 16-23, but is not catalogued in his volume. The overview of Mayer forgeries published in Nederlandsch Maandblad door Philatelie May 1967, pp. 250-265 does not include this type. Some minor internal reinforcement of the corners but an absolutely superb and uncreased letter with complete content preserved. With certificate BPA (2015) which notes "handstamp genuine, pinholes within handstamp." (Image 1) (Image 2)

9005   image1824, Letter from Batavia 16 Jan. 1817 to Tagal and redirected to "Paccalongan or Samarang". With superb strike of the “JAVA GENERAL POST OFFICE/BA-/TAVIA/DOL-/LORS/STY-/VERS" double-circle handstamp (WdB 13), and circular markings of Tagal (WdB 23) and Joana (WdB 20). All postmarks in red and clear strikes, on letter with some toning spots sent to Captain Barkley on the ship Henry. "Post Paid" written on front and 10 stuivers entered into the postmark for the distance Batavia-Tagal. Some light browning to envelope but otherwise very fine. An important and unique usage with three clearly struck postmarks used at the very end of the British Administration of Java. Illustrated in Wolff de Beer Poststemples in Nederlands Oost Indie 1789-1864, p. 53. 9006   image1818 "Post Comptoir Surabaya" handstamp (WdB 38; known in use Jan. 1817-June 1819) with accompanying FRANCO (WdB 39) both in red, on complete letter to Banjoewangie, datelined 20 July 1818, with full content preserved. A superb strike of the first Netherlands Indies postmark that continued the design of the preceding British markings but with a value in guldens and stuivers. A payment of 4 stuivers is indicated in the postmark for the distance Sourabaya-Banjoewangie. Superb in every respect and one of the finest letters existing with the first NEI postmark. 9007   image1821, "Resident Djocjacarta" circular marking with a start at centre, on complete folded letter with full contents sent from J.D. Boutet in Djocjocarta 7 Aug. 1821 to L.J. Block, avocat in Samarang. The circular stamp of Resident Djoccjacarta is not a postmark but a mark of the local Resident to put on official mail. The notation on front "Franco 6 st." indicates that 6 stuivers was paid for the distance Djocjocarta-Samarang. The marking struck in red is not listed in Wolff de Beer's catalogue and it is possibly the only known. A fine and clean letter in immaculate condition. With detailed certificate van der Vlist (2009). The "Resident Djocjacarta" marking is similar to the "Resident Souracarta" marking (WdB 60); both are personal handstamps applied to official mail. The Resident Souracarta is listed in Wolff de Beer's catalogue and is known on three letters. One letter sold in the Magnolia sale May 2023, lot 1419 (hammer $1800). (Image 1) (Image 2)

9008   image1823, Letter from Samarang 2 Apr. 1823 to Batavia, with absolutely superb strike of the “JAVA POST OFFICE/SA-/MARANG/DOL-/LORS/STY-/VERS" double-circle handstamp (WdB 14) and accompanying POST PAID handstamp (WdB 30). Letter sent to the Batavia merchant van Rijck, Prediger & Co. with internal docketing noting receipt 7 Apr. 1823. Charge of 18 stuivers prepaid by sender noted on front, for first weight letter 1821-1826. An exceptional letter with one of the sharpest strikes of the large Samarang British postmark we have seen. A perfectly preserved letter To Daendels in Samarang with full correspondence inside, incl. very interesting note "Per post 23 junii verzonden 10 Bank billeted a f. 1000 elk". 9010   image1844, letter from Amsterdam to Surabaya, datelined 1 Nov. 1844. Struck on arrival in Batavia by the rare and misspelled oval "Zeebrief Ongefrankee" postmark in blue ("Ongefrankee" instead of "Ongefrankeerd"), known only in use 1844-45 (WdB 68b). A perfectly struck postmark and the earliest recorded use. On reverse is oval forwarding handstamp of Behn, Meyer & Co. Singapore. From the correspondence to Salm & Bouman in Sourabaya: With charge notation 60c on front for maritime mail (rate valid Apr. 1816-Sep. 1850). 9011   image1847, "Franco Zee Brief Grissee" large oval postmark in red on large part folded letter, with docketing inside "Babat 19 June 1847, received 27 Sep." sent to Amsterdam and routed by overland mail via Marseille. On front is also Purifié Lazaret Malte and on back is Alexandria 12.9, Paris 26.9 and Amsterdam arrival 27.9 18447. Charge of 150 duties noted on reverse. Wrapper without content, recipient's name is effaced but a sublime strike of the only known Grissee Zee Brief postmark. THE UNIQUE LETTER WITH AN EXCELLENT STRIKE OF THE GRISSEE ZEE BRIEF POSTMARK THAT IS UNRECORDED IN THE LITERATURE. A MAJOR RARITY OF THE NEI PRE-STAMP POSTAL HISTORY. Undated folded cover with address in Dutch and Chinese to a Chinese in Rembang with four red Chinese character chops, black "Ongefrankeerd" (Unpaid) oval carefully crossed out in light red manuscript with "Franco" and "40" rate in the same hand; red "Franco" oval handstamp applied to confirm prepayment. Minor edgewear along top but extremely attractive and unusual. Clear strikes on two folded covers without content; one in blue with manuscript "25" due rate to Samarang, the other in red with manuscript "franco 10" paid rate (but the marking means unpaid) to Rembang. 9014   imagec. 1860, undated folded letter sent from Banjermassing to Barmen, Prussia, struck by clear black Banjermassing Franco negative impression postmark with postmark (WdB 100a, used 1856-1863; from 1863 the postmark was struck in blue). Letter with manuscript directive "via Triest p. overland mail". On back is rectangular EMMERICH/OBERHAUSEN/2 4 - III and circular AUSG No 3 2 4 . Also rate marking 480, deleted and replaced by 360, indicating overland mail third weight step via Triest (Dec. 1848-Oct. 1864). Very fine, reinforced with transparent tape at top. With detailed certificate van der Vlist (2008). EXTREMELY RARE BORNEO POSTAL HISTORY SENT TO GERMANY. EXCELLENT AND DISTINCTIVE STRIKE OF THE RARE OVAL BANJERMASSING POSTMARK IN BLACK. 9017   imageGroup Lot: British and Dutch Occupation Markings on Stampless Covers: A wonderful group of 28 folded covers or letters, includes 8 letters with double-circle handstamps used during British Occupation 1812-17, including 1 Sourabaya and 6 Batavia (one with "POST PAID", one with "CHERIBON" and one with "INDRAMAYOE" negative oval, others without additional markings); 9 examples with Samarang double-circle handstamps used during Dutch Occupation 1817-25, with "POST PAID" (one marked "Cito" in manuscript, stained but rare), and one superb Post Comptoir Sourabaya with "FRANCO" straightline (WdB 38, 39); 2 letters with "FRANCO" straightline handstamps, as used in Sourabaya 1819, 1823 (WdB 39); 9 letters with town handstamps, including clearly struck red "PACCALONGAN" circular datestamp (WdB 21) on undated folded cover with part of letter (very rare, with 2009 Van der Vlist certificate), one with Indramayoe oval and others with standard markings from Buitenzorg, Cheribon, Rembang and Tagal. some toning and faults endemic to the area and period, but overall an exhibit-worthy group (many are on original exhibit pages with good information), most of the better items have certificates (Van der Vlist describes marking enhancement on a couple of items and so dismisses them as "vervalising" as was his habit). Overall Fine with several Very Fine covers, a large group of scarce to rare covers with an average value of $200-300 and a few worth closer to $750-1,000 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
